41 Color Paintings of Hans von Aachen, German Mannerist and Portrait Painter
Hans von Aachen (1552-1615) was a German Mannerist and portrait painter who was active in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. He is known for his elegant and refined style, as well as his use of allegory and mythology in his work. Aachen was born in Cologne, Germany, in 1552. He studied painting with his father, Hans von Aachen the Elder, and later with the Flemish painter Bartholomeus Spranger. In 1574, Aachen traveled to Italy, where he spent the next 12 years studying the works of the Italian masters, particularly Raphael and Michelangelo.
In 1588, Aachen returned to Germany and settled in Munich, where he became court painter to the Duke of Bavaria. He remained in Munich for the rest of his life, producing a large number of portraits, altarpieces, and mythological paintings. Aachen's work is characterized by its elegant and refined style, as well as its use of allegory and mythology. His portraits are often idealized, with the sitters depicted in elegant poses and clothing. His mythological paintings often depict scenes from the Bible or from classical mythology, and are characterized by their rich colors and complex compositions.
