Early Life and Career

William Tecumseh Sherman was born in Lancaster, Ohio, on February 8, 1820. His father was a lawyer and judge, and his mother was a devout Christian. Sherman attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he graduated sixth in his class in 1840.

After graduating from West Point, Sherman served in the Seminole Wars and the Mexican-American War. He resigned from the army in 1853 and worked as a banker and lawyer in San Francisco. However, when the Civil War broke out in 1861, Sherman returned to the army and was appointed colonel of the 13th Regiment of the United States Army.

The Civil War

Sherman played a major role in the Civil War. He commanded the Army of the Tennessee in the Western Theater, and he was responsible for some of the most decisive victories of the war, including the Battle of Shiloh, the Battle of Vicksburg, and the Battle of Atlanta.

Sherman was a controversial figure during the war. He was known for his ruthless tactics, and he was accused of war crimes. However, he was also a brilliant strategist and tactician, and his victories helped to secure the Union victory.

After the Civil War

After the Civil War, Sherman served as the Commanding General of the United States Army from 1869 to 1883. He retired from the army in 1884 and died in New York City in 1891.

Sherman's Legacy

Sherman's legacy is complex and controversial. He was a brilliant military strategist and tactician, but he was also known for his ruthlessness and brutality. However, there is no doubt that he was one of the most important figures in American history.

Sherman's impact on modern war studies is still being debated today. Some scholars argue that his tactics were too ruthless, and that they led to unnecessary bloodshed. Others argue that Sherman was a brilliant strategist who understood the nature of modern warfare.
